CHOCOLATE: A DARK BOOK YOU ABSOLUTELY LOVE

Four Psychos by Kristy Cunning

I’m not so different from most people.
Like everyone else, I have life goals.

Goal #1: Become a real girl instead of this invisible ghost thing I currently am.

Goal #2: Convince the four men I’ve been haunting for the past five years to pick me to be their new toy after goal one is complete.

Goal #3: Figure out who/what I am and why I can’t remember anything past the five years I’ve been haunting this quad.

Goal #4: Eat popcorn.

See? Perfectly normal. Sort of.
Gotta start small, after all.
It’s not like anyone else is perfect either.

**Sexual situations
**Reverse Harem
**Dark humor galore
**Language warning

Best of luck with this one! It’s something else!

VANILLA: A LIGHT READ

Falling for Sakura by Alexia X.

When Sakura once again meets the gorgeous brothers, Sebastian and Darcy Princeton, forbidden feelings are awakened and old flame ignites.

Sakura is accustomed to being rejected, hated, bullied, and unloved. When she is taken in by the wealthy Princetons, she works hard to earn the family’s trust and love. Her endeavor, however, ultimately leads to a series of unfortunate incidents.

Now years later, the twenty-three-year-old beauty dreads the moment she once again has to meet the drop-dead gorgeous Princeton brothers, due to arrive for their cousin’s wedding. Dodging their very presence is next to impossible since the brothers are attracted to her like moths to a flame and thwart her escapes at every turn. This leads to ungodly, tempting situations, awakens forbidden feelings, and ignites old flames that have been suppressed and lying dormant for many years.

When she finds them competing for her, she is torn between Sebastian Princeton, the brother who loves her and watches over her from a distance, and Darcy Princeton, the brother who was once her best friend and now secretly yearns for her forgiveness and her love once again.

RED VELVET: A BOOK THAT GAVE YOU MIXED EMOTIONS

Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford

Ada and her father, touched by the power to heal illness, live on the edge of a village where they help sick locals—or “Cures”—by cracking open their damaged bodies or temporarily burying them in the reviving, dangerous Ground nearby. Ada, a being both more and less than human, is mostly uninterested in the Cures, until she meets a man named Samson. When they strike up an affair, to the displeasure of her father and Samson’s widowed, pregnant sister, Ada is torn between her old way of life and new possibilities with her lover—and eventually comes to a decision that will forever change Samson, the town, and the Ground itself.

Follow Me to Ground is fascinating and frightening, urgent and propulsive. In Ada, award-winning author Sue Rainsford has created an utterly bewitching heroine, one who challenges conventional ideas of womanhood and the secrets of the body. Slim but authoritative, Follow Me to Ground lingers long after its final page, pulling the reader into a dream between fairy tale and nightmare, desire and delusion, folktale and warning.

CHEESECAKE: A BOOK YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance

Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits—talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead. The ghosts of the dead aren’t usually dangerous; they just like to talk…a lot.

The undead are another matter.

Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she’s forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection.

The undead senators won’t help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire—and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay….

I know, I know.. You’ve probably seen this book used in some of my other tags but, seriously, this is one hell of a series!

COFFEE CAKE: A BOOK YOU STARTED BUT NEVER FINISHED

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

I’ve tried and I’ve tried to see what all the hype about this series is but.. it just isn’t happening.

CARROT: A BOOK WITH GREAT WRITING

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire

Dark Dance by Tanith Lee

The Naming by Alison Croggon

I always associate ‘beautiful writing’ with Seanan McGuire, always, including the books done under the pseudonym ‘Mira Grant.’

Tanith Lee’s writing is haunting and it seemed rather like some of Anne Rice’s work to me.

Alison Croggon incorporates little lyrics and rhymes into her work, further emphasizing her own unique style of writing.

TIRAMISU: A BOOK THAT LEFT YOU WANTING MORE

I loved this book. It was dark and strange and mysterious. I wanted more (more of everything) from House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland. It was written so beautifully but.. the end just didn’t sit well for me and I would like to see where the author would go with the storyline. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it’s a standalone and will leave me without closure.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo had a lot going on and, as the first in a series, I feel like we didn’t get to enjoy the story or characters as much because of the setup, now that that’s been done, I’m pretty interested in seeing what comes next.

CUPCAKES: A SERIES WITH 4+ BOOKS

What kind of question is this? There are so many! How do you choose?!

Introductions: The Ghost Bird Series by C. L. Stone

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

FRUIT CAKE: A BOOK THAT WASN’T WHAT YOU ANTICIPATED

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

Be careful who you let in.

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

I chose this one, not because it was unpredictable or shocking, this was my pick because I didn’t expect to like it. At all. And to end up enjoying the dang thing so much was not, in fact, what I anticipated.

Very interesting how you put this post together, Sheri. I’d really have to stop and think of my choices. Of the books you listed, I definitely want to read The Family Upstairs. I’m not much for cake, but I do love a good cherry pie! 🙂

    Fun challenge!

  3. I have to agree, classifying books like that is kind of amazing, it feels like a new way of sorting through things, in this case – books.
I’m usually in thrillers, crime novels and more realism, most likely not what appeals to younger folks.
Well done! You are certainly a very interesting and fair book reviewer and critic!

    1. Sheri Dye

Seconded. It just makes things a little more interesting.
And I like your taste! I tend to reach for the darker reads, myself.. you might be surprised at how bloodthirsty young readers can be. 🤭
I really appreciate your support and kind words, Inese, it means more than you know! Thank you and be well!

  4. Carrie

        1. Sheri Dye
