Join me and check out ‘The Last Ten Books’ Tag!

What have you been reading lately?

The sheer amount of creative, amusing, and entertaining tags out there really is endless.

I’m having one of those ‘my brain feels like mush’ days that, somewhere along the way, turned into weeks. Know that feeling? Yeah. Not fun. (And I’ve just typed out the same sentence four times soOo.. I’ll be making this quick.)

This tag was originally created by booktuber Marc Nash but I came across it @ One More Book‘s blog. I wasn’t tagged or invited but I enjoyed the prompts and it seemed like a distracting bit of fun at the time.. and it has been.

This is what I ended up with..
Enjoy!

The Last Book I Gave Up On:

Real Easy
by Marie Rutkoski

Publication date: January 18, 2022

It’s 1999 and Samantha has danced for years at the Lovely Lady strip club. She’s not used to mixing work and friendship—after all, between her jealous boyfriend and his young daughter, she has enough on her plate. But the newest dancer is so clueless that Samantha feels compelled to help her learn the hustle and drama of the club: how to sweet-talk the boss, fit in with the other women, and make good money. One night, when the new girl needs a ride home, Samantha agrees to drive: a simple decision that turns deadly.

Georgia, another dancer drawn into the ensuing murder and missing person investigation, gathers information for Holly, a grieving detective determined to solve the case. Georgia just wants to help, but her involvement makes her a target. As Holly and Georgia round up their suspects, the story’s point of view shifts between dancers, detectives, children, club patrons—and the killer.

I have a pretty good idea of what the author was going for here but..
It just seemed like it was trying too hard and missed the mark.

The Last Book I Reread:

Flowers in the Attic
by V.C. Andrews

At the top of the stairs there are four secrets hidden. Blond, beautiful, innocent, and struggling to stay alive…

They were a perfect family, golden and carefree—until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. Kept on the top floor of their grandmother’s vast mansion, their loving mother assures them it will be just for a little while. But as brutal days swell into agonizing months and years, Cathy, Chris, and twins Cory and Carrie realize their survival is at the mercy of their cruel and superstitious grandmother…and this cramped and helpless world may be the only one they ever know.

Why this author? Why this book? Who knows.. I was in reading slump and wanted something I had found absorbing before and, somehow, it ended up being this.

The Last Book I Bought:

Sophia, Princess Among Beasts
by James Patterson

Sophia is smart, beautiful, and accomplished, a beloved princess devoted to the people and to reading books. The kingdom is hers, until she is plunged into a nightmarish realm populated by the awful beasts she read about as a child.

The beasts are real. And so is the great army marching on her castle. The people look to Sophia for protection. They will all perish unless she can unlock an ancient secret as profound as life and death itself.

I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while (It’s a YA fairy tale by James Patterson.. how could I resist checking that out?) and now that I have a physical copy.. Maybe I’ll actually get to it.

The Last Book I Wrote in the Margins of:

Never. In my family you could get in less trouble for drawing on the walls than to write in a book.. (and if that book happened to be a Bible? You best be good with Jesus..)

The Last Book I Had Signed:

Romanov
by Nadine Brandes

My name is Anastasia. The history books say I died. They don’t know the half of it.

Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before.

Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are either to release the spell and deal with the consequences, or to enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her.

That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.

My husband was the one who was able to get me a signed copy of this book for Christmas.. and I can’t even begin to tell you how surprised and touched I was.

The Last Book I Lost:

Sky in the Deep
by Adrienne Young

OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

I swear I have it around here somewhere.. Hell if I know where it went though.

The Last Book I Had to Replace:

Ariadne
by Jennifer Saint

Ariadne, Princess of Crete, grows up greeting the dawn from her beautiful dancing floor and listening to her nursemaid’s stories of gods and heroes. But beneath her golden palace echo the ever-present hoofbeats of her brother, the Minotaur, a monster who demands blood sacrifice.

When Theseus, Prince of Athens, arrives to vanquish the beast, Ariadne sees in his green eyes not a threat but an escape. Defying the gods, betraying her family and country, and risking everything for love, Ariadne helps Theseus kill the Minotaur. But will Ariadne’s decision ensure her happy ending? And what of Phaedra, the beloved younger sister she leaves behind?

There may have been an extremely unfortunate incident involving, I kid you not, some actual spilled milk.
Accidents happen, right? Then again.. so do tragedies.

The Last Book I Argued Over:

The Vampire Diaries
by L.J. Smith

Elena Gilbert is a high school golden girl, used to getting what she wants. And who she wants. But when the boy she’s set her sights on—the handsome and haunted Stefan—isn’t interested, she’s confused. She could never know the real reason Stefan is struggling to resist her: Stefan is a vampire, and Elena’s in danger just by being around him. What’s more, Stefan’s dark, dangerous vampire brother Damon has just arrived in town. And wherever Damon goes, trouble always follows.

Trying to explain the massive inconsistencies between these books and the television show is almost the equivalent of banging your head into a wall. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both addictive, but there are so many deviations from the original story that it’s mindboggling.

The Last Book I Pre-ordered:

You may be surprised by this but.. I very rarely pre-order books. (Pretty much never, actually.)
With the insane amount of books I already have to read (my good ol’ TBR is beyond ridiculous) it’s a simple task for me to wait until the release date.

My apologies for making this so short, I appreciate you taking the time to stop in and read my post, and I hope you found something that piqued your interest. Be sure to stay safe out there and keep warm!

What did you think?
Have you read or plan on reading any of these books?
