A Poem for Strength and Comfort

For those facing hard times, new challenges, and fierce struggles.

Welcome!

We’ve faced a lot in our fleeting lives, whether old or young, we’ve overcome much.
The “simple” act of living can be the most difficult hurdle we face.. but oh—do we live.

Whatever you’re up against, whatever the battle, you’ve got this.
You’re strong.
You’re brave.
And you are not alone.

“Poetry is the art of making yourself vulnerable with great dignity.”

William Ernest Henley

William Ernest Henley was a writer, a critic, and (my personal favorite) a poet.
When he was twelve years old he was diagnosed with tubercular arthritis and later underwent the amputation of his leg to below the knee, with only a risky surgery being what saved the other foot. It was during his recovery that Henley began writing, producing many poems like ‘Invictus‘, his works include messages supporting inner strength and perseverance.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

This poem had a significant impact on me during some really hard times and it’s always remained a beautiful comfort when I need to find it in myself to be strong. I hope it brings you something as well..
Whatever that may be.
