The ‘It’s okay that he’s a douchebag‘ love-interest trope.

Here Be Sexist Vampires (to name a few examples)
Countless books pander to the ‘he’s a bad boy‘, a ‘rebel‘, he’s an ‘alpha‘. Really? He’s a sexist, inconsiderate,(usually entitled) control freak who acts as though he has a right to speak to or treat you however he pleases.. No.
Btw, there is a significant difference between an overprotective alpha-male who takes charge because he loves you. And the douche-canoe who expects that his actions are acceptable because you love him.
Well.. That is the perfect first question to get me all fired up.
- Which writer(s) do you feel is overrated/overhyped?
This one might cause a stink.
Her characters tend to lean more towards unlikable than not for me(except for Magnus Bane, he’s great).. but it’s just such a shame since her writing and world building are gorgeous.
- What are your least favorite books you’ve read since joining
BookTubeblogging?
These are my two most disappointing books of the year.
Sometimes you run into those characters that you just can’t get in to.. or over. All of these were chucked because the main character was too frustrating or obnoxious.
- What is a terrible ending that ruined an otherwise quality book?
My brain completely blanked out on this one so I had to reach..
I actually liked this series. Girl finds the strength inside of herself to go against expectation and forge her own path? Okay. She then fights the system for the right to be whoever she chooses? Heck, yea.
But.. that ending? Not cool.
This book has had a few rough critics but, I think, with the scope of what the author had playing out? She did a damn fine job.
- Which fictional character(s) do you wish was not killed off?
If you haven’t read the ‘Throne of Glass‘ series by Sarah J. Maas..

My first instinct is to answer with ‘the dog‘..
Got to love that recurrent ‘I Am Legend‘ and ‘John Wick‘ trauma but, let’s see..
Nehemia in Crown of Midnight.
I really liked Nehemia, she was a fierce and intelligent character. Her friendship encouraged Celaena to want better things for herself and their people.. But I also think she was short-sighted and cruel to have created such a plan, one that would break her friend so completely, in the hopes that those left behind might rebuild her into the warrior they needed. She would have made a better friend if she had stuck it out and actually fought with Celaena instead of putting her in a position to carry that burden and heartache alone.
- What are some of your bookish pet peeves?
Well, this question could be inflammatory..
I can’t stand: Unlikable characters.
Constant internal monologues.
Jerk-off misogynistic male love interests.
Slow building tension.. that goes nowhere.
Characters who already know and can do everything.
When people fold the corners of the pages to save their place.
To name a few..
There are so many more and I really hope I’m not the only one with a ridiculously long “I don’t like that‘ list.
- What are some books you feel should have more recognition?
These books were all fantastic five star reads for me.
With really fun, interesting, and lovable characters.. I would strongly recommend them all!

The Keepers introduces us to an incredibly unique cast of characters, powers, and world building. The lead protagonist is an independent, smart-mouthed, and resilient young woman who just landed in a world of trouble. I don’t want to spoil anything but.. her story really starts out with a bang.
- What are your thoughts on censorship and banning books?
With the way things are going? I think it becomes more of a possibility every day. There’s too much ‘controversy’ over everything today. Someone will find a reason that our books are too offensive, violent, or unfit to expose children to.. and then next thing you know.
Are you going to have to pry my books out of my cold dead fingers if that does happen?
Oh. Absolutely.

OMG – I am so with you on the ‘Jerk Love Interest’ trope – why do authors still think that women are attracted to such men?
Right? But some people are in to that and that’s fine.. so long as I don’t have to read about it. 😅
I couldn’t agree more with your trope dislike, Sheri. Ugh. I also don’t like wishy-washy love triangles full of angst. I usually can’t get through those and have to close my “dog-earred” book. Lol. I do like “unlikeable” characters, but only for so long. They have to grow on me with some reason to root for them or why bother.
Lol, I feel like I’m too old to enjoy the idea of love triangles, they just seems like a lot of work. Sorry about the dog ears! And I can appreciate unlikable characters.. I just prefer when the author meant for them to be that way! 😅

What an interesting tag! I totally agree with you that Nehemia should not have been killed off in Crown of Midnight – she could have been such a strong influence on the plot had she stayed with Aelin instead of taking such a gamble (even though it worked). Thanks for sharing!
The creator did an excellent job! And thank you! Nehemia is probably my biggest disappointment for that series. I agree that it worked.. but I also think that together they could have found a better way. Thanks for stopping!
I have to say I agree on the “alpha” male where books are like we’re mates so your mine but I do like Cassandra Clare’s books with the more “bad boy” type. I do see your point though and it’s a fine line there. And then Divergent…. that just make me😭
Right? I don’t mind strong men.. as long as they recognize that women are strong, too. And I loved Magnus(not exactly ‘bad boy’ but he’s just so amusing.)

Your second question was overrated authors or books. Oh my, I’d say there are numerous very much overrated authors. The interesting thing is that it often feels like some books by the same author are completely off. I have stopped buying any books written by quite a few very famous authors because of a total disappointment. And then, i accidentally hit something great by that writer. Could it be so that some book are not even written by that writer, but just have their name on it?

Someone once told me that ‘expectation leads to disappointment’ and, well, he was certainly right about that. You grow to expect a certain style or voice from the authors you love, and in doing so, set yourself up to be let down. Many authors are branching into other genres right now and it can be a wonderful new experience or just fall flat. Either way, you roll the dice with every book on whether you’ll like it or not.
And I know my book choices tend to be a little all over the place but I really don’t like to restrict my reading options. If I could absorb them all through osmosis, I would.
