The Book VS. Book Challenge

Pick your poison in a ‘This or That’ battle of the books.

Choose your favorite in a face-off between books that used to be popular.

I’m so glad I was able to read these before the movies and television shows were created.
Yes, I know that makes me a little old (to the young) but, hey, you have to look on the bright side.

Now.. Most of you will recognize a lot of these books, some of you won’t know any but, for the readers who do.. this should be a good bit of fun.

A literary showdown!
Book against book.
Love it or not.
What will you choose?

Rules

  • Link back to the creator, Sheri @ ReadBetwixtWords
  • Choose two books that you felt were similar to one another.
  • Pick the one you like more.
  • Share a few thoughts about the book you chose (we want to get to know you!)
  • And tag a friend to keep it going!

It’s that easy!

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
VS
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Twilight
The books really are better than the movies.
Still not a favorite, too much angst, but they weren’t as unlikable until the movies ruined them for me.

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
VS
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

Harry Potter
Percy Jackson is good but it will never be Harry Potter!
Hermione is my spirit animal.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
VS
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

The Chronicles of Narnia
This one’s a little trickier.. I love both of these series for entirely different reasons.
I’d have to go with ‘Narnia’ every time though.. I’m such a cat person.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
VS
Legend by Marie Lu

Divergent
I love the characters and world building in Divergent, Veronica Roth did an outstanding job creating a story you could fully immerse yourself in.
I wasn’t too happy with the ending though.. it irked me.

The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith
VS
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy!
If the only thing you know about this series is the movie. I’m sorry. That film is one of the worst adaptations I have ever seen. Ever. It’s an insult to the books and author.
The series is fast paced, entertaining, and creative.. in other words? Fantastic.
Avoid the movie!

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
VS
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Throne of Glass
Hands down.
A tough, intelligent, resilient main character who fights back against the wrong being done VS one that doesn’t like who or what she is and would rather be like the bad guys? No choice.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
VS
The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The Hunger Games
This is another series that I feel the movies didn’t live up to. I actually liked The Maze Runner film more.. but bookwise?
Have to go with The Hunger Games.

Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz
VS
The Immortals by Alyson Noel

The Immortals (Evermore)
I find psychics and psychic gifts so intriguing!
I remember liking these books when they came out, I even began collecting both series but now?
There’s just so much angst and pining in both of them that I doubt I would be able to reread either one.

The Selection by Kiera Cass
VS
Matched by Ally Condie

The Selection
Now, I’ve only read the first book in the The Selection series(years ago), and two in Matched (many years ago) but I liked The Selection more..
I do need to eventually reread it and finish the series though.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
VS
Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Mara Dyer
I actually liked both of these.. but I have a tendency to lean more towards ‘unreliable narrator’ trope.

House of Night by P. C. Cast
VS
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

House of Night
Why, you ask? The mythology in the House of Night series was really interesting.
I loved the Native American aspects and, if you can ignore all the teenage drama (good luck), you have a pretty great story.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
VS
Fallen by Lauren Kate

I know I made this post but.. do I have to pick one?
I know I was moderately interested in these books when they came out but more than a decade can really change your tastes..
Okay. I’ve made my decision. I don’t like either of them.

That’s that!

All of these books were ‘trending’ at some point. Most were more than a good ten years ago, however, when they were published matters little. They all have something special to offer (excluding The Mortal Instruments. Sorry but.. No.)

What did you think?
Did you collect, read, or become obsessed with any of these books?

You don’t like the mortal instruments? 😂
And oh, I always thought the vampire academy books would be bad, but I might give them a shot now, I hope it works out 😁. Lovely tag!!

I really don’t.. I know it’s such a popular series but I just couldn’t bring myself to like it. Mostly Jace.
But I did enjoy Vampire Academy quite a bit. The main character is a tough, smart mouthed, kick-butt and a whole buttload of trouble. It’s a fun read, I hope you enjoy it!
And thank you so much for reading and commenting, I’m glad you liked it!

  2. Carla

I have not read most of these so can’t really comment, but I have made note of some you liked and may read them some day, Sheri.

    1. Sheri Dye

Really? They are young adult fantasy and supernatural reads, as long as that’s something that interests you, these should be interesting reads.. I hope you enjoy them!
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment, Carla, I really appreciate it!
Have a safe but fantastic Thanksgiving week!

I dip in and out of YA and NA fantasy/supernatural books. It is not a genre that calls to me, but I have enjoyed the ones I have read. I will check out a couple of these and see what I think. Enjoy your Thanksgiving week, Sheri.

I can understand that.. YA reads can be either really good or not so much. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you enjoy whichever you try!
Thank you very much, Carla, I hope to.
          Stay safe and happy reading!

  3. Lady Tessa

I love this! I totally agreed about Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Fun post!

    1. Sheri Dye

Thanks so much, Tessa! You’ll make me blush!
Harry Potter will outlive us all and still probably be a fan favorite..
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving week, hun, stay safe!

You are always posting fun and interesting challenges!! some of these books make me feel old as well haha

    1. Sheri Dye

That’s so nice of you to say, thank you! I’m glad you like them!
Agreed. I didn’t even think about how old they are until my husband mentioned it. It’s crazy how time can seem to be going ridiculously slow and yet pass so quickly..
