Book Review: Something is Killing the Children Vol 1 4/5

Why did I wait so long to read this?

I have been a manga fan for well over a decade now (and, wow.. that’ll make you feel old) but, strangely enough, graphic novels are a new thing for me. Something about the colored pages throws me off. (And yes.. I do know how odd that may sound.)

This one had been floating around everywhere but it wasn’t until a fellow blogger, Jonathan Pongratz, strongly recommended this one that some real effort was put into getting my hands on a copy.
And I’m so glad I did.

I love any book with a good monster/creature in it and this one does not disappoint!

Warning! Foul language, murder, graphic violence, blood and gore..

Something is Killing the Children Vol. 1 by James Tynion

First line: Truth or Dare?

In a town where children are being viciously murdered.. It’s all fun and games until the screaming begins.

It starts with a scary story.

Something came into one of the boys yard one night, a monstrous figure too big to be a person, a nightmare that was never supposed to be real.

Now the boys are dead, all but one, and none of it makes sense.
Monsters aren’t real.

Then a strange woman arrives in town looking for the young survivor, she has questions about that terrible night but.. Can James, the only survivor, trust her with the truth?

Four Stars!

Holy crap!
Whatever ‘is killing the children’.. is Stephen King and Stanger Things level freaky.

Main characters:
James
Erica Slaughter

Location:
Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin

Artwork: Dark
Characters: Intriguing
Storyline: Compelling
Pace: There and gone like *snaps fingers*

Liked: The art is dark and suits the story brilliantly.. Not the kind of style I typically lean towards but it is great for this kind of creepy, hair-raising novel.

The pace is fast, which works out really well, it pulls you right in and keeps you there. I had no trouble getting sucked into this one (a tad bit obsessively, I might add.)

Disliked: I was a bit startled by how short it was. It wasn’t just “suddenly” over, nope, it ended in the kind of screeching halt that makes the word “abrupt” seem like a polite understatement.

I also forgot how much I don’t appreciate not knowing who’s who until there’s a name drop in some of the graphic novel/mangas.. which you have to hope happens eventually, otherwise, you have no idea who the characters actually are. Bit frustrating, that.

Overall:

I had just gotten into it, it had just gotten interesting, and BAM! the end. The worst part? I don’t have the next volume. NoOo!
*sighs* At least, from what I did get to read, I know that I’ll enjoy continuing this series.. and hopefully soon.
I’m going to go sulk now.

Thank you for checking out my review, I know it was a bit short but.. so was the novel.

If you enjoy graphic novels, manga, or comics.. (heck, even if you don’t) I highly recommend giving this one a shot! If you’re not a fan of epic cliffhangers, though, I would suggest having more than just the first volume on hand.

Stay safe out there and stay warm!

Do you read graphic novels?
Have you read this one?

Sidenote: Curious minds would like to know.. Are you offended by cursing/foul language in reviews?
