Book Review of The Maid by Nita Prose 4/5

An interesting read full of both curious and suspicious characters.

I don’t typically reach for the more popular books because they tend to be a disappointment but so many of you had amazing things to say about it that I couldn’t resist.. and, wow, you guys were not kidding with this one.
It is unique.

If you enjoy mysteries, one of a kind characters, and a story you can really sink into..
Be sure to keep this one it mind.

Happy Reading!

The Maid by Nita Prose

Publication date: January 4, 2022
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
Pages: 280 (kindle)
Standalone

First line:I am your maid. I’m the one who cleans your hotel room, who enters like a phantom when you’re out gallivanting for the day, no care at all about what you’ve left behind, the mess, or what I might see when you’re gone.

Molly works as a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel. She’s very happy with her job, with keeping things clean and tidy, and having a sense of purpose.

She’s an unusual young woman. Recently turned twenty five. Molly doesn’t see the world as most do. She’s awkward in social situations, often mistaking a persons expressions or body language, and it’s made her few friends. Her gran used to help her navigate these things but now that she’s gone.. there’s no one. She’s tough, though, and continues moving forward.. the memory of her gran’s rules and advice guiding her along.

But today isn’t like the others for Molly. No.
Today she discovers the body of one of the hotel’s regular VIP guests while cleaning.
He’s quite dead.

Now Molly and her beloved hotel are under investigation for more than just murder.
Shady things are afoot and it’s up to Molly to discover the bad egg behind it..
before she, herself, takes the fall.

Four Stars!

Characters: Fascinating
Storyline: Absorbing. Addictive.
Pace: Perfect in all the right places.
Writing: Intelligent. Compulsive. Quotable.

“I know others think differently, that a maid is a lowly nobody. I know we’re all supposed to aspire to become doctors and lawyers and rich real-estate tycoons. But not me. I’m so thankful for my job that I pinch myself every day. I really do.”

Molly is a maid at the Regency Grand, she loves her job, the order and tidiness.
The job offers a certain amount of invisibility there that allows her her eccentricities without judgement.

“It’s easier than you’d ever think—existing in plain sight while remaining largely invisible. That’s what I’ve learned from being a maid. You can be so important, so crucial to the fabric of things and yet be entirely overlooked.”

Molly is an amazing character. She’s observant, highly intelligent, and a little bit (a lot) socially awkward. Her very logical way of thinking is often blunt and makes her seem uncaring.. but there’s this innocence about her that draws you in.
She’s a good egg and I kind of love her.. a lot.

“The truth is, I often have trouble with social situations; it’s as though everyone is playing an elaborate game with complex rules they all know, but I’m always playing for the first time.”

The other characters are also well done. Each was interesting in their own way (whether for good or ill) and, while their parts (and a good amount of the storyline) seem rather predictable, it is so well written that it hardly matters..

“You can’t judge a person by the job they do or by their station in life; you must judge a person by their actions.”

This was a very clue-like mystery read. The murder, the danger, it all felt almost secondary to the characters motives and movements themselves.. Which I did find a little odd at times but not in an unpleasant way.

I want to gush and bash and vent all of my opinions about this book, the characters, and the mystery but I wouldn’t want to spoil anything for you.
This is one book you’re going to want to check out.

In case you couldn’t tell.. Nita Prose has made a fan out of me and I’ll be looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

“Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”

That’s all for today!
Thank you for reading and I really do hope that you’ll give this book a chance to win you over!

      She did!
It’s such a delight when you come across such unique reads like this.. When a completely unoriginal story can be made into something special by the characters who bring it to life.

Great review, Sheri. I enjoyed this story, but had a few issues with it, but nothing to stop my enjoyment. I really like the style of this review.

Thank you! There were a couple things that I didn’t care for but, fortunately, nothing that got in the way of my ability to enjoy the rest.
I appreciate you saying so, Carla! Have a beautiful week!🌷
