A Book That a Certain Friend is Always Telling You to Read:

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Publication date: December 2012
Pages: 529
Genre: Teen and Young adult, Sci-Fi, Young adult Dystopian,
Series: Book 1 of 4: The Darkest Minds

Book one in the hit series that’s soon to be a major motion picture starring Amandla Stenberg and Mandy Moore–now with a stunning new look and an exclusive bonus short story featuring Liam and his brother, Cole.

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
But when the truth about Ruby’s abilities–the truth she’s hidden from everyone, even the camp authorities–comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. On the run, she joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp: Zu, a young girl haunted by her past; Chubs, a standoffish brainiac; and Liam, their fearless leader, who is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
While they journey to find the one safe haven left for kids like them–East River–they must evade their determined pursuers, including an organization that will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. But as they get closer to grasping the things they’ve dreamed of, Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

I have tried to read this book FOUR times. Four. That’s ridiculous, right? And, why, you ask?
I have no freaking clue.
Is it young? Yes.
Are there a crap-ton of cliches? Yes.
Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m just too demanding(and now Prince is singing ‘When Doves Cry’ in my head.) I know I’m a mood reader to the bone but, for some reason, whatever my frame of mind.. this book just isn’t doing it.

A Book That’s Been on Your TBR Forever and Yet You Still Haven’t Read It

Archon by Sabrina Benulis

Publication date: December 2011
Pages: 405
Genre: Occult fiction, Occult horror, Paranormal fiction, Urban fantasy
Series: Book 1 of 3: Books of Raziel

Angels and demons do battle for a girl possessed by the spirit of a powerful, dead angel in this fabulous paranormal debut by Sabrina Benulis. Archon is the first of the Books of Raziel, a truly fantastic and very hip new take on heaven’s warriors that readers of the angelic novels of Danielle Trussoni, Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, and Alexandra Adornetto are sure to adore.

Archon is new wave urban fantasy, a tale of the supernatural that brilliantly blends passion, obsession, horror, and suspense in a way that will appeal to dark fantasy fans and paranormal romance readers equally. Sabrina Benulis’s angels are creepy, sexy, and totally awesome—and, like Anne Rice’s amoral, ambiguous, and addicting vampires, they will seduce and terrify you at the same time.

I have no idea how I got this book, where it came from, or why I haven’t read it yet.. but it has been sitting on my ‘to be read’ shelf for a good 6+ years. Probably about time I picked it up.
Honestly? I don’t even know anything about the book.. or the author.. *flips over* Where did this thing even come from and if I don’t know, why is it on my tbr!?
ANYWAY!
If it’s been sitting around this long.. I make no promises for when I’ll get around to reading it.

Publication date: June 2016
Pages: 304
Genre: Crime fiction, Suspense, Mystery
Series: Book 1 of 3: Detective Jude Fontaine Mysteries

Despite colleagues’ doubts about her mental state, she resumes her role at Homicide. Her new partner, Detective Uriah Ashby, doesn’t trust her sanity, and he has a story of his own he’d rather keep hidden. But a killer is on the loose, murdering young women, so the detectives have no choice: they must work together to catch the madman before he strikes again. And no one knows madmen like Jude Fontaine.

Well, this character’s story is pretty f*d up.
I read this in January and found it to be intriguing.. but not riveting. It was my first experience with Anne Frasier and, while I may not have enjoyed this book enough to continue the series, I am very curious about some of her other books and plan to read more from her.

A Classic You’ve Always Liked the Sound of, But Have Never Actually Read

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Publication date: July 1959
Pages: 189
Genre: Novel, Young adult fiction, Psychological fiction
Standalone

Golding’s iconic 1954 novel, now with a new foreword by Lois Lowry, remains one of the greatest books ever written for young adults and an unforgettable classic for readers of any age.
This edition includes a new Suggestions for Further Reading by Jennifer Buehler.

At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate. This far from civilization they can do anything they want. Anything. But as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far removed from reality as the hope of being rescued.

So.. this book is something I’ve been hearing about since I was a girl and it’s always sounded pretty fascinating. I’m actually pretty peeved that I haven’t taken the time to read it yet but, to be fair, I have spent the last six months trying to cram ten years of missed reading into my poor, battered brain.

A Book You See All Over Instagram But Haven’t Picked Up Yet
I don’t have Instagram but a book I’ve been seeing all over WordPress that I’m really interested in is:

The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon

Publication date: April 2021
Pages: 285
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
Standalone

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Invited and The Winter People comes a chilling new novel about a woman who returns to the old family home after her sister mysteriously drowns in its swimming pool…but she’s not the pool’s only victim.

Be careful what you wish for.

When social worker Jax receives nine missed calls from her older sister, Lexie, she assumes that it’s just another one of her sister’s episodes. Manic and increasingly out of touch with reality, Lexie has pushed Jax away for over a year. But the next day, Lexie is dead: drowned in the pool at their grandmother’s estate. When Jax arrives at the house to go through her sister’s things, she learns that Lexie was researching the history of their family and the property. And as she dives deeper into the research herself, she discovers that the land holds a far darker past than she could have ever imagined.

In 1929, thirty-seven-year-old newlywed Ethel Monroe hopes desperately for a baby. In an effort to distract her, her husband whisks her away on a trip to Vermont, where a natural spring is showcased by the newest and most modern hotel in the Northeast. Once there, Ethel learns that the water is rumored to grant wishes, never suspecting that the spring takes in equal measure to what it gives.

I’ve been seeing this book Everywhere and, to be honest, there are so many mixed feelings.. my heads almost to the point of spinning! But I am such a fan of this author.. Everything I’ve read by McMahon has been fantastic. I would highly recommend her books to anyone interested in intelligently written characters and shocking twists in their psychological thrillers.

I could totally relate to Lord of the Flies. I’ve been meaning to read that one for years! And I’ve also been meaning to try Maas, but the romance aspects scare me away. Hmmm. I’m going to make a deal with myself to read both this year. 😀 A fun tag, Sheri.

That’s great! Fingers crossed that we both succeed at getting to them! The tags are such fun and creative distraction. 😊
