Book Review of Even Good Girls by Nicholas Jordan 4/5

A young woman driven by grief and guilt searches for her friend’s killer in this compelling murder mystery.

Two best friends. One girl dead.. The other the main suspect.
Will Tabitha be able to find Nancy’s killer before she goes down for the murder?

Another book down in my attempt to SpelltheMonthinBooks September and also the @PerilReaders challenge! Yay!

I’ve actually had some pretty great luck with the books chosen for September.. so far. Fingers crossed that it continues!

Happy Reading!

Even Good Girls by Nicholas Jordan

Best friends Tabitha and Nancy are inseparable. Since they were children, this unlikely pair have stuck together, and are now staring down the barrel of their last year in high school.

But, lately, Nancy has been acting strangely.. she’s secretive.. distant. Tabitha feels Nancy pulling away and, in her frustration, manages to cause a rift in their friendship.

This, unbeknownst to either of them, would be their last real exchange before Nancy goes missing.
Then they find her body.

The girls very public argument puts Tabitha in a terrible position with the detective in charge, who makes no attempt to restrain her dogged belief that Tabitha is guilty, and it quickly becomes a race to find the killer before Tabitha takes the fall.

Four Stars!

I liked this one.
It reminded me quite a bit of ‘Broken Things’ by Lauren Oliver.
. with less angst.

Liked: I liked that Tabitha and Nancy were so different, I think it pushed each girl out of their comfort zone, and sometimes that can be the best way to grow. Tabitha’s a tough young lady and adapts to the circumstances she finds herself in as necessary. She’s determined to find her friend, regardless of the danger to herself, and so faces down enemies and allies alike. How many of us can say we have a friend like that in our lives?

Disliked: It feels like there was a lot that Tabitha either should have caught onto more quickly or have already guessed. I’m sure this could have been something that was done to make the character seem more believable but it kind of just irritated me.
I’m also not a big fan of when authors rely heavily on the ‘one friend is prettier, smarter, and more outgoing.. but the other is average’ trope. It’s not a beauty pageant, it’s a thriller, and it won’t matter how pretty you are (or were) when you’re dead. Blunt but true.

Overall:

I did enjoy this book. No deep, hidden meanings or brilliant twists and turns. Just a good old fashioned hunt for the truth before time runs out.

I would recommend this if you’re looking for a simple YA murder mystery that isn’t very dark or complicated.

Anyone else noticing just how many of these are starting to sound alike?

Ooo…this one sounds good. And – this is going to sound weird – but something about the cover made me happy that the arm on it was attached to a body. For some reason as I was scrolling up, I had this sinking feeling that it wouldn’t be. Lol. I guess that’s a testament to the effectiveness of the creepy vibe the cover has. Excellent review! ❤️

Lol! I know exactly what you mean! The first time I passed by this cover I thought the arm was part of a crime scene.
And it was a good readI enjoy mysteries and crime solving but.. It was a little predictable.
