Book Review of The Hike by Susi Holliday 3/5

This will be a weekend to die for.

Hello and Welcome back!

The Hike was a quick, short read that can easily be finished in one sitting.. whether or not you’ll enjoy it is another matter.

This was an Amazon First Read pick for me and while I wouldn’t say there’s anything inherently wrong with this book, the potential is there, I thought it could have stood to be a bit longer.

If you’re looking for something to pass the time, this book is a good option, it may even surprise you.

Happy Reading!

First line: He is in much worse shape than she is.

They’re all hiding something.

A weekend hike in the Swiss Alps goes terribly wrong for sisters Cat and Ginny when their unmitigated contempt of one another results in a shocking act of violence that threatens the lives of everyone involved.

Three Stars

Characters: Unlikeable. Annoying. Brutal.
Storyline: Winding.
Pace: Steady.
Writing: Clever.
Cover: 3.5/5

POVs
Cat. Ginny.

Captain Thierry Pigalle.
Ginny’s husband Tristan and Cat’s husband Paul.
Plus an Unknown/Stalker.

The story opens on Sunday with two of the characters, (we’re not told who,) injured and waiting outside of a police station.
Something unfortunate has obviously happened to them but they refuse to speak with the local police, insisting they wait for their embassy representatives.

We’re then transported to Friday when a group of four, two married couples, have come to spend the weekend enjoying the beautiful Swiss Alps.
Cat needs some space from the scandal her husband Paul has caused back home.
Ginny needs a distraction from her husband Tristan.
None of them like each other and they all know it.

Right away I knew I wasn’t going to like these people but they appear to be written that way. Several of them we’re up to no good from the beginning and the rest were just annoying human beings.

The bitterness and contempt Cat and Ginny have for one another is toxic and I found myself gritting my teeth through their interactions. There are many reasons for the animosity between them, good reasons, but I think the book was just too short to appreciate how big a part their history plays here.

Paul and Tristan are equally unlikable, in fact, lets assume I didn’t like any of the characters and go with that.

But, and this is a big but, BUT the story wasn’t half bad.
I wasn’t looking for loveable, cuddly characters with a nice, captivating plot.. I needed a quick distraction and it served that purpose well.

Does it sound like I didn’t enjoy the book?
Surprisingly, I did.

The author manages to take a group of grade A askholes and wraps them all up in twist after twist. Lies, secrets, and betrayals act as a clever diversion while an undercurrent of duplicity plays out. I was impressed with her creativity, if not her characters, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
