Book Review: The Invite by L.A. Detwiler

Four women + A killer = A reunion to die for.

Welcome!

How are you doing this weekend?
Tucked safely into a good book, I hope.

Today I’d like to give a big thank you to Goodreads Giveaways and Amazon Kindle for the opportunity to read this book!

I wasn’t blown away but, to be fair, after you’ve read ‘group gathered in remote location with a killer’ so many times.. they begin to sound the same. Still, as long as you look hard enough, you can easily find what makes each story special and this one is no different.

As always, be sure to check with trigger warnings, there may be content some readers will find upsetting.
Otherwise? Enjoy!

Three and a Half Stars

Four women receive an invitation from an old friend to spend the week in a posh country house..
But strange things begin happening and their host, Elle, never shows.
Is it all part of some elaborate plan to mess with them or is something more sinister going on?

I feel strangely unmotivated to write this.

A group with a shady past gets lured to a remote location where a killer picks them off one by one.
But what if it’s simultaneously more and less than that.. ?

There were certain things about this book that made it different from others like it but, oddly enough, those differences seemed to soften the tension and atmosphere of the story. I can’t exactly tell you what they are because it would spoil the entire story but.. I can say that I’ve never read a murder mystery quite like this one.

The characters were alright, I’m not going to propose to anyone but at least they weren’t all douchebags like they tend to be.
The women all had their own distinct personalities that bring balance to the group in a believable way. So many forget these days that you can be friends with people you don’t always agree with and this book showcases that. It’s a shame that I couldn’t connect with any of them.

The storyline wasn’t at all complex, you can predict most of what’s going on beforehand, but there are a few small surprises that keep you turning pages.

Was it exciting? Not really. But it was a pretty decent read.
If you’re looking for an interesting (but not overly complex) mystery to get lost in, this will do it.

Thanks so much for stopping in and checking out my review, I hope it was helpful!

What is your favorite murder mystery?

That’s a shame, but as you say this storyline has been done so many times already.

It has but.. it really does depend on the author and what they do with it.

Sounds interesting. I think it’s fun to read a simple mystery sometimes. Great review!

Thank you! It was interesting but I always kind of hope for more of a pulse-pounding, edge of your seat kind of feeling with mysteries like this.
Are you enjoying your current read?

      1. Pooja G

Yeah, I get what you mean. Thrillers and mysteries are better when they’re fast paced with twists.
I’m not reading anything this month since I’m so busy 😫

Gasp Oh no.. that’s awful. At least the month is almost over?

          1. Pooja G

Yes, it was a fun month but I’m ready for some downtime!

          2. Sheri Dye

Hey, that’s great! It’s nice to have good times in reality but I always love coming back to the books. Happy reading!
