Novelizations of television shows we know and love..

Welcome, everyone!

We know books are all to often butchered by the big screen, we’re even prone to occasionally enjoying them, but how often do you hear about the books that are inspired by our favorite shows?

Novelizations.
The books that come after.
Whatever you call them.. they can be tricky for readers.
After all—Why read a book when you already know the story?

I have not read a single book below, each has been pulled from my TBR, so I can’t tell you how well they’ve captured the heart and soul of the shows they’re born from but I am dying to find out.. Are you?

Stranger Things

Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds by Gwenda Bond

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • If you think you know the truth behind Dr. Brenner’s experiments at Hawkins Laboratory, prepare to have your mind turned Upside Down in the first official Stranger Things novel—“the prequel story that fans have been waiting for” (Kirkus Reviews).

It’s the summer of 1969, and the shock of conflict reverberates through the youth of America. As a student at a quiet college campus in the heartland of Indiana, Terry Ives couldn’t be farther from the front lines of Vietnam or the protests in Washington.

But the world is changing, and Terry isn’t content to watch. When word gets around about an important government experiment in the small town of Hawkins, she signs on as a test subject for the project, code-named MKULTRA. The remote lab, deep in the woods, contains a mystery Terry is determined to uncover.

Behind the walls of Hawkins National Laboratory—and the piercing gaze of its director, Dr. Martin Brenner—lurks a conspiracy greater than Terry could have ever imagined. To face it, she’ll need the help of her fellow test subjects.

Amid the rising tensions of the new decade, Terry Ives and Martin Brenner have begun a different kind of war—one where the human mind is the battlefield.

Supernatural

Supernatural: Nevermore by Keith R.A. DeCandido

Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America…and he taught them how to kill it.

Sam and Dean have hit New York City to check out a local rocker’s haunted house. But before they can figure out why a lovesick banshee in an ’80s heavy-metal T-shirt is wailing in the bedroom, a far more macabre crime catches their attention. Not far from the house, two university students were beaten to death by a strange assailant. A murder that’s bizarre even by New York City standards, it’s the latest in a line of killings that the brothers soon suspect are based on the creepy stories of legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe.

Their investigation leads them to the center of one of Poe’s horror classics, face-to-face with their most terrifying foe yet. And if Sam and Dean don’t rewrite the ending of this chilling tale, a grisly serial killer will end their lives forevermore.

Hey, some fan fiction is really good.. I’ve never read any for Stargate though. That had to be interesting.

  2. Carla

Great choice, Sheri. I haven’t read any of these, but I did watch some of these series.

Thank you! I’ve watched the shows but never read a novelization so they have me curious.
Would you read any of them?

        1. Sheri Dye

Oh I love reading movie/TV show tie-ins! Used to be when I was a kid, media tie-ins were synonymous with crap, but recently the quality has gone up with major franchises bringing in some SFF big names and heavy hitters.

How interesting.. I know a bunch of movies like Alien and Stargate have them but I don’t think I ever picked one up.
Have you read any of these/would you?
