Book Covers to Love: Dark Flowers

Readers are a lot like crows.. We’re collectors and are are easily distracted by shiny things.
Like book covers.

Nothing hits you like that first glimpse of a stunning cover from across the room, almost as though fate had brought you together, and you just know you’re going to have to read it..
It was love at first sight, after all.

Okay.. I’m taking another small step to the left with this book list.
You see, like you, my Tbr is packed. We’re talking thousands, it’s kind of ridiculous (and a little impressive, if I must say so myself..) and I just don’t feel like some of these books are getting enough love.

This list will be compiled of TBR books only!
I’ve decided to start off with dark, beautiful covers that feature flowers. But we all know it’s not just all about what’s on the outside that matters.. these books also sound incredibly interesting.

Please, be sure share any feedback or opinions you might have on this post, thank you!

Let’s begin.

Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford

Publication date: January 21, 2020

A “legitimately frightening” (The New York Times Book Review) debut novel about an otherworldly young woman, her father, and her lover that culminates in a shocking moment of betrayal.

“You’ve never encountered a father-daughter story like Rainsford’s slim debut” (Entertainment Weekly). Ada and her father, touched by the power to heal illness, live on the edge of a village where they help sick locals—or “Cures”—by cracking open their damaged bodies or temporarily burying them in the reviving, dangerous Ground nearby. Ada, a being both more and less than human, is mostly uninterested in the Cures, until she meets a man named Samson—and they quickly strike up an affair. Soon, Ada is torn between her old way of life and new possibilities with her lover, and eventually she comes to a decision that will forever change Samson, the town, and the Ground itself.

Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain

Publication date: September 7, 2021

A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling debut supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and Rory Power.

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide.

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World—and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey’s best friend, disappeared six months earlier.

Grey can’t believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something—her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou—a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town’s bloody history—Grey realizes that La Cachette’s past is far more present and dangerous than she’d ever understood. Suddenly, she doesn’t know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent—and La Cachette’s dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

We Are All the Same in the Dark by Julia Heaberlin

Publication date: August 11, 2020

“If you only read one thriller this year, let it be this one. Psychologically absorbing, original and atmospheric. I could not turn the pages fast enough.”—Elin Hilderbrand, #1 New York Times bestselling author of 28 Summers

It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru’s brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

When Wyatt finds a lost girl dumped in a field of dandelions, making silent wishes, he believes she is a sign. The town’s youngest cop, Odette Tucker, believes she is a catalyst that will ignite a seething town still waiting for its own missing girl to come home. But Odette can’t look away. She shares a wound that won’t close with the mute, one-eyed mystery girl. And she is haunted by her own history with the missing Tru.

Desperate to solve both cases, Odette fights to save the lost girl in the present and to dig up the shocking truth about a fateful night in the past—the night her friend disappeared, the night that inspired her to become a cop, the night that wrote them all a role in the town’s dark, violent mythology.

In this twisty psychological thriller, Julia Heaberlin paints unforgettable portraits of a woman and a girl who redefine perceptions of physical beauty and strength.

From the author of You Must Not Miss comes a haunting contemporary horror novel that explores themes of mental illness, rage, and grief, twisted with spine-chilling elements of Stephen King and Agatha Christie.

All they want is a fresh start, but behind North Manor’s doors lurks a history that leaves them feeling more alone . . . and more tormented.

As the cold New England autumn arrives, and Jane settles in to her new home, she finds solace in old books and memories of her dad. She steadily begins making new friends, but also faces bullying from the resident “bad seed,” struggling to tamp down her own worst nature in response. Jane’s mom also seems to be spiraling with the return of her childhood home, but she won’t reveal why. Then Jane discovers that the “storage room” her mom has kept locked isn’t for storage at all — it’s a little girl’s bedroom, left untouched for years and not quite as empty of inhabitants as it appears . . .
Is it grief? Mental illness? Or something more . . . horrid?

Every year, as the anniversary of 9/11 inches closer on the calendar, Kit Capriol scans the memorials published in the New York Times. It’s a simple thing to look up a name and phone number, to reach out to surviving family members who might still be yearning for connection with their lost loved one… to offer assistance. Now, though, something has changed. 5. yvonnembee

Some gorgeous covers, I love flowers on covers. It always amazes me how something so pretty can also look so ominous on a book 😨xx

    1. Sheri Dye

Lol! I agree! They’re beautifully haunting.. somehow both a warning and an invitation.

  6. Carrie

An impressive list from your TBR Sheri! One of my favorite thrillers now has a cover with flowers, Deadly Messengers by Susan May. Loved that one.🙂

    1. Sheri Dye

I bet yours is pretty impressive, too! And I’ll have to check it out, thanks, I already know you have great taste!

  7. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

I’ve read We Are All the Same in the Dark, but it wasn’t very memorable I guess, because I am having trouble now remembering what it was about 😛 And I have That Dark Infinity on my list!

    1. Sheri Dye

Lol, that’s unfortunate.. but relatable. I’ll still have to check it out, though, thanks!
And I hope you enjoy The Dark Infinity more than the other one!

  8. D. Wallace Peach

You’re right about readers being like crows, Sheri. I love great covers. These are all interesting and a lot are similar with the flowers. I was most attracted to Lies Like Poison because it was so different and creative. That was fun!

    1. Sheri Dye

Thank you! I was hoping that little comparison wouldn’t cause any ruffled feathers. 🤭
They are quite similar.. I’ve noticed that they end to do that. I think they each have something unique about them but, you’re right, that one did stand out in the crowd.
I’m glad you enjoyed it and thanks so much for reading and commenting! I hope you’re well!

      1. D. Wallace Peach

I thought the comparison was very clever. 😀 The skull was a stand out too!

        1. Sheri Dye

Thank you, that’s so nice of you! And they did a fantastic job with the skull one.. I think the snake was a particularly nice touch! 😎

  9. Carla

I never realized so many dark stories had flowers on the cover. The only one I have heard of is one I read, The Dead Girls Club. It was okay, but not as good as I had anticipated. Great post, Sheri.

    1. Sheri Dye

I hadn’t either until I started looking but, it does make a lot of sense, flowers are well known for their beauty.. and danger.
That’s a shame about ‘The Dead Girls Club’.. (Can I ask why you didn’t enjoy it as much?)
Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Carla, have a beautiful weekend!

      1. Carla

There were a couple of reasons. First there was a lot of teen angst which I wasn’t expecting and I just couldn’t connect to the characters. I also listened to this one and one of the voices was just too weird for me. Who knows, it might be what you are looking for and it was just me. Have a great weekend Sheri.

        1. Sheri Dye

Oh, boy, as if teen angst wasn’t enough when we were actually teens. But I may still have to check it out for curiosity’s sake..
          Thank you, Carla, stay safe!

  10. Leah's Books

You’ve got some really awesome books on here, and the covers are so pretty!

    1. Sheri Dye

Thanks, Leah, there are so many to choose from that the post practically put itself together.
      I’m glad you liked them!
